Words by Fred CARBONE | 21th February 2018
In his 30-year career, "The Experiments" is Max Durante's first LP. After two sinewy EPs released on Sonic Groove in 2015 and 2016, Max Durante, pioneer of the Italian techno-electro scene since the end of the 80s, takes an ambient and experimental direction with 8 tracks oscillating between electronica / IDM and deconstructed industrial techno, surrounded by collaborations with Retina.it and Fabrizio D'Arcangelo (Rephlex).
"The Experiment" is a kind of journey that commemorates the genesis of techno and its evolution through a more personal sound experimentation, suggesting the multiple influences of Max Durante. Kynant Records, Berlin label launched in 2015 was baptized by is "Black Light" EP, suggesting a more "left field" evolution of his music.
The LP starts with eight minutes of total diving in a perpetual rhythm with 'EX-P01', then gradually turns into a more metallic atmosphere (EX-P02) and cosmic (EX-P04, whose sample used comes from a piece of Mika Vainio "Mikro Makro", Raster Noton).
The LP's second record returns to more techno-like rhythms alongside the producers Retina.it and D'Arcangelo (EX-P05 and EX-P06), where industrial synths echo broken-beat techno rhythms, and begin to complete its journey with a more binary cadence with the EX-P07 track and its intermittent interstellar melody. The disc lands softly with "EX-P08", a dark and disturbing room at the same time, which closes this moving odyssey of which Max Durante has the secret, for 30 years.
