Curated by Dominick Fernow aka Vatican Shadow for over 20 years, Hospital Productions has played a major role in the history of Techno

Hospital Productions is the label founded in New York in 1997 by Dominick Fernow, who holds an innate sense for the panorama of world noise music and its derivatives. At the same time, his very first Prurient project was born and Hospital's beginnings are no longer an intensive activity. Prurient's first cassette releases, which Fernow defines as "accidental recordings", will later be considered more as industrial punk than pure industrial.
The sprawling discography of Hospital Productions (more than 500 records) contributes to anchoring his position as the pioneer of noise on a large scale. Few labels have been as important and influential as Hospital Productions. Over the last 20 years, the label has produced an impressive number of quality recordings, cassettes and discs in a variety of genres, from noise to power electronics, black metal and techno.
Fernow's multiple collaborations with Aaron Dilloway (Wolf Eyes), John Wiese to name a few, pause the solo outings of a prolific, almost unstoppable Prurient. The arrival of dronesque artists such as Alessandro Cortini, or Kevin Drumm in 2008 marks the beginning of the rise towards ambient derivatives of the omnipresent noise on the label, and will give birth to Vatican Shadow, techno-ritual-ambient project from Fernow. Under this alias, he introduces a revival of the influences of industrial music, EBM and noise on the British and American techno. From this new identity will come several collaborations with industrial techno heads, like Ancient Methods or Function, while releasing on its Hospital territory.
In spite of the progressive disappearance of the punk vein within the label, the legacy is and will remain sincerely immense. A label made and stitched directly around the founder, who remains the main creator, even if we don’t count the releases in ultra-high-end editions such as Hair Police, Burning Star Core, Wolf Eyes, Aaron Dilloway, John Wiese, Kevin Drumm or Carlo Giffoni, to name a few.
